Frequently Asked Questions What’s the difference between the Civic League, Roads and Maintenance, and the Community Foundation? In general terms:
Which plat do I live in? Click here to view a PDF of plat map.
What are the plats? The plats are the tracts of land assembled by the Roland Park company upon which to develop the neighborhood, starting in 1891. The neighborhood was developed over the course of some 30 years. The first tract assembled by the company and developed was named Plat 1; the second, Plat 2, etc.
Why is Plat 5 divided into "city" and "county" portions? Don't we all live in the city? When development started in Roland Park, the city line did not extend as far northward as it currently does. Plats 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 were entirely within Baltimore County at the time. However, the company's southernmost plat, Plat 5, lay partly in the county and partly in the city. The city annexed large areas of land in 1918, with its northern boundary moving at that time to its present location. At that point, Roland Park — hitherto primarily a county neighborhood — became entirely a city neighborhood. ______

Letters October 11, 2011 Webmaster: We live on the west side of 300 block of Woodlawn Road. In recent days,
during the day, we have seen a few rats crawling around in the alley
and then today in our back yard.
October 7, 2011 _____ Webmaster: Reluctantly, I need to report that there was a break in during the day today at the Klassen's at 10 Hillside Rd. Someone broke in through a back porch door with what might be a crow bar and took a large flat screen tv and some other personal items. No one was home and no one was hurt but it is still a bummer. If anyone saw anything suspicious, please call the northern district police precinct.
Mary Page Michel _____ Hi (name removed): _____ March 6, 2011 Webmaster:
On Saturday, March 5, around 3:30pm, the first day of RPBL practice, my passenger side window was smashed and my handbag and wallet were stolen at the Mt. Washington UB Fields. I called the police and filed a report; they responded within 20 minutes. My car was within 100 yards of where we were practicing, but because the practice fields are down the hill, no one saw or heard anything. Please remember to leave nothing of value in your car-I learned the hard way. Alicia Schmidt _____ January 26, 2011
Webmaster: On, Monday, January 24th between 10:30 AM
and 11:00 AM my wife's car was broken into on Oakdale Road and her purse
stolen. The car was parked in front of our house on the north side of
Oakdale between Roland and Goodwood Gardens headed east. The purse was
on the floor behind the passenger seat and not in plain view. This
portion of Oakdale is heavily traveled so the theft occurred very
quickly. We were both inside the house having just returned from an
errand and heard nothing even though the passenger side rear window was
broken after two failed attempts to jimmy both passenger side doors. The
theft was reported to the police. An officer responded within ten
minutes of our call to 911.
Leave nothing in your vehicle even if you intend to be gone for only a few minutes which was the case in this instance.

Neighboring Roland Springs has experienced eight larceny from auto incidents during the past two weeks. In each case, the owner had forgotten to lock his or her car, or had left it unlocked because of frozen lock problems. In all cases, the intruder went into the glove compartment, probably looking for a stored GPS. Some small change was the only thing taken and there was no vandalism other than items being tossed around. Larceny from unlocked cars is the primary crime in the Northern Police District so please remember to lock your car at all times and make sure that valuables and easy to sell on the street items are not left in the car.
Bill Miller President Roland Springs Community Association _____ January 26, 2011
On Tuesday, January 25th ( before the current snow storm) my wife and I walked on the east side of Roland Avenue from Cold Spring Lane to Eddie’s and the Post Office. On four occasions we needed to walk in the street because homeowners had not cleared their sidewalks and they had become icy. We also saw other people walking and jogging on the street. It is really important for people to clear their sidewalks so people can walk around safely. Perhaps the RPCL could send notices to owners who are not taking care of their walks and remind them that they not only have a legal responsibility, but a responsibility to their neighbors as well. _____ October 23, 2010 On Friday, October 22, at
11:30 a.m., my husband witnessed a young man trying to gain entrance to
a neighbor's back door (on Wilmslow at Oakdale). When he saw my
husband looking at him, the suspect left and my husband called 911. My
husband got into his car and followed the suspect from a distance,
tracking his movements through the neighborhood. My husband witnessed
the suspect walking into backyards and trying to enter back doors of
numerous houses along Wilmslow Road, from Oakdale to Coldspring. Over a
20-minute period, my husband called 911 a total of three times, each
time giving the police his updated location so they could meet him and
identify the suspect. My husband tracked him into Alonsoville, and then
onto the Loyola University campus at Coldspring and Linkwood (where the
police said they would meet him). After waiting several minutes, my
husband notified a campus security officer, who had also noticed the
suspect's suspicious behavior on the Loyola campus. The security
officer confronted the suspect, and, eventually my husband left, the
Baltimore city police having never arrived.

_____ September 22, 2010 Webmaster: On my walk yesterday down to the Light Rail crossing at Lake Roland, I heard lots of violent machinery grinding around, and decided to explore. Once across the tracks and up the hill to the park I noticed a good bit of tree removal activity, and upon investigation saw a few trucks and steam shovels belonging to the Carroll Tree Co. I talked with one of the workers who told me that the Bob Judge _____

August 24, 2010 Webmaster: Bad news on Longwood and Club. Today at 1:30 p.m. on a bright afternoon, two thugs in a car robbed at gunpoint two Roland Park residents (in their early 30s) out for a walk. The police were notified. Please be extra cautious. Louise Phipps Senft Plat 3 _____ |
