Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between the Civic League, Roads and Maintenance, and the Community Foundation?

In general terms:

  • Civic League (est. 1895) — oversees governmental affairs, zoning, crime and traffic issues.
  • Roads and Maintenance (est. 1909) — watches over design and building in Roland Park and the quality of lanes (alleys) and paths.
  • Community Foundation (est. 1987) — raises money for projects in our community that benefit present and future generations of residents.

Which plat do I live in?

What are the plats?

The plats are the tracts of land assembled by the Roland Park company upon which to develop the neighborhood, starting in 1891. The neighborhood was developed over the course of some 30 years. The first tract assembled by the company and developed was named Plat 1; the second, Plat 2, etc.

Why is Plat 5 divided into "city" and "county" portions? Don't we all live in the city?

When development started in Roland Park, the city line did not extend as far northward as it currently does. Plats 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 were entirely within Baltimore County at the time. However, the company's southernmost plat, Plat 5, lay partly in the county and partly in the city. The city annexed large areas of land in 1918, with its northern boundary moving at that time to its present location. At that point, Roland Park — hitherto primarily a county neighborhood — became entirely a city neighborhood.

Bad news on Longwood and Club. Today at 1:30 p.m. on a bright afternoon, two thugs in a car robbed at gunpoint two Roland Park residents (in their early 30s) out for a walk. The police were notified. Please be extra cautious.

Webmaster:

I wanted to let you know that our house on the 4500 block of Roland Avenue was burglarized on Saturday, August 21, sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. We went out briefly, and the burglar kicked in the basement window (on the northwest side of our house) and then broke the wooden inside door to get from the basement to the first floor. We believe that our return must have startled whoever it was because nothing was taken, although our stereo in the front room was unplugged and some things in that room appear to have been moved.

Perhaps we are being paranoid, but the police told us to be on the lookout for the burglar(s) possibly to return since they have been inside the house but did not get anything. This morning just as we were making a u-turn at Roland and Kenwood to go south on Roland, someone pulled up in front of our house in a small, older faded-black pickup truck that had a cap on the back of the truck. The guy in the truck was a white male, wearing a red no-sleeve t-shirt, with very, very short hair.

As we got suspicious of him (and drove past him a couple of times), he left. We often have people stop in front of our house to check their cars or talk on the phone or get out to job or walk and that did not appear to be the case here. This guy was just sitting there with his truck engine turned off, looking around.

Anyway, I wanted to give you a heads up and urge you to keep a look out. And, yes, we have been motivated to use our alarm again. We learned our lesson, fortunately without losing anything.

As I put out my recycling this evening (August 18), I discovered that sometime in the last 24 hours our garage had been broken into. Though it appears that they took nothing, its very disconcerting considering that I saw someone in the alley at 3:15 a.m. earlier this week and notified the police (see below). I am planning to report this incident too.

A resident of the 200 block of Wyndhurst had his car vandalized this morning at 2:00 a.m (Wednesday, August 18). The resident heard noises in the street, looked out his window, and saw 2 males and 1 female, estimated between the ages of 18 and 22, jumping up and down on the roof of his car. The car roof collapsed under the weight. The resident then chased the suspects, who ran off toward the Roland Park pool. All of the suspects had light-colored hair. One of the males had a crew cut and the female was heavy-set. They apparently looked like average college students, and were reasonably well-dressed.

The police were contacted and arrived 10 minutes later, but did not apprehend the suspects. If you have any information, or see anyone vandalizing property, please contact the police immediately.

Webmaster,

My vehicle has been broken into on at least two occasions the last few months. Clearly, the perpetrators are seeing the neighborhood cars as easy prey. Let’s keep our eyes open!

My daughter's car was parked at the corner of Wilmslow and Oakdale last night. It had a window broken and was rummaged. Driver's license missing.

Webmaster:

Someone smashed my car passenger window last night and rifled through my glove compartment. I was parked on Oakdale. All I had on my seat was a bag obviously filled with cloth grocery bags and a book on tape, so I can't imagine what inspired it. As best I can tell, no other cars were impacted. I'm filing a police report. Was anyone else so honored?

A dog walker around 6 a.m. saw a dull maroon van, shabby, decals, parked with motor running, but empty on Oakdale. The dog walker noticed first that there were two zippered bags, one black, one transparent, approx. 1 foot long, with something inside (tools of the trade?) on ground near my car, then noticed my shattered car window. When I later discovered my broken-into car, the bags were gone.

Did anyone else see or hear any suspicious activity Monday night/early Tuesday morning?

One of our neighbors was also broken into: a GPS device taken from her glove compartment.

I was up last night with my daughter at 3:15 a.m. and saw a car parked for about 5 minutes in the lane between Woodlawn and Hawthorn at the corner of Oakdale. I noticed this morning that the gate from our backyard to the alley was open.

I just saw a sickly looking raccoon cross Hawthorn Road from the east side, and go into the block near the intersection of Hawthorn and Woodlawn, bounded by Elmhurst on the south and Wyndhurst to the north. I phoned it into 311. In case you want to post a warning.

On July 7, 2010, someone came into our yard, opened up our garage and took my moped. It is a very distinct
purple color, and unfortunately our garage opens onto Cold Spring Lane and everyone can see what's in the garage. So, there's no telling where my moped is at present. Maybe it's in someone's garage, but they have to want to ride it sometime! It's small, but it's still mine, and I'd like it back. Please keep your eyes open for a purple Tomos Sprint. If you see such a thing, please call Northern District, ask for Officer Harker, 410-396-2455.

I live near Wyndhurst and Roland. I wanted to let everyone know that my car has been broken into several times in the last few months. Additionally, someone tried to break into my apartment the morning after memorial day. Please tell everyone to make sure to take safety precautions with their cars and homes.
